In his work, Johan Lingier (Oostende, Belgium 1959) explores human perception and reflects on how our way of thinking makes a reliable perception of reality (im)possible. Human perceptions determine rather than they are being determined. Earlier in his career perception of man (others and yourself) was the theme of his paintings. In recent work he focuses on the perspectives of time and space in which we observe our world and on the fundamentals of image construction. In particular he investigates how the manipulated or accidental arrangement of basic elements (tiles, pixels...) can create or suggest meaning.
His installations question the space in which and for which they are created. They challenge the experience of the spatial context by the visitor.
